HOW DO I CONNECT MY DVR OR COMPUTER TO ANOTHER DEVICE?

In most cases, when you are connecting one device to another, you plug both ends of a CAT 5 UTP cable with RJ-45 jacks for both ends of the cable into the Ethernet ports of the devices.  The cable has three different configurations, depending on the order of the copper wires in the RJ-45 jacks:  straight-through, cross-over, and roll-over.  Depending on what devices you are connecting together, you must choose which configuration of cable you will use.

Connecting a computer or DVR into a network device:

In this situation, you want to use the straight-through configuration.  An example of this kind of cable would be what you use to connect your computer to a modem.
